As a beginner, what class should I start with?

Updated: Jun 2

All first class is challenging, so don’t be too hard on yourself in the beginning. It’s normal to feel uncomfortable when you start something new. When you're on your mat, you can leave your ego at the door and free yourself from judgemental thoughts.

This is the perfect venue to work through feelings of insecurity or frustration. You don't have to be flexible to do Yoga, neither do you have to be an athlete to take up an Inferno Pilates class! Although be mindful if you are working through personal injuries that may require some modifications on your part. We don't expect new members to work to their maximum, so start at your own pace, sit down when you need to and breathe.

If you are trying out Inferno Pilates or Hiit Yoga for the first time, please remember that these classes are designed to challenge your endurance, train your cardiovascular, work the muscles in your upper and lower body to get you into your best shape very quickly. So pace yourself as needed, keeping in mind that the room is still going to be heated to warm up your muscles quickly and get those sweat going!

In general, all our classes are accessible to beginners and experienced students. Depending on your own personal well being, flexibility, age and fitness level, you may need to try out the classes in order to find the right fit.

We advice you to come with an open mind, and be aware that most of the classes are performed in a medium and some in a hot heated room. Most of the postures in Yoga classes are beginner to intermediate levels. These are all described under the heading of the classes that you see on schedule. You can also find the same information if you look at the class descriptions that is listed on the website in the 'About Class' section.

In the first few classes, beginner students will feel challenged as some of the postures or movements are new to them. This is normal. It is important to take the time to observe and perhaps sit out a few postures. Learn proper modifications of poses that doesn't feel good for you. Understanding the purpose of each posture or movement is key to improving techniques that are being taught in class.

We always recommend new students to exercise patience when practicing in a heated room for the first time. Preparations outside the class prior to coming in can have a big influence on how the physical and mental body behaves during the practice.

Pay attention on your body's intake of water as hydration and proper nutrition plays a big factor when taking up a hot class. It is very common to feel light headed and dizzy due to improper breathing technique, lack of sleep or when the body is low in electrolytes.

Hot Yoga and Pilates will not only get you in top-notch shape, it will help you grow spiritually and emotionally as well. The wonderful benefits of working out regularly expand far beyond the four concrete walls of the studio. Your skin looks better, your body more flexible, you will sleep better, more focussed with tasks at hand and perform better at work! Adding HIIT training into your practice will improve strength, balance, mobility and your overall posture to mention a few!

After a hot and challenging class, it’s beneficial to consume water-rich foods like orange, watermelon, berries, cucumber and pineapple. Some of our members love to replenish with an electrolyte drink, coconut water or water with lemon and touch of honey after class.

Ultimately, no one knows your body more than yourself. When there is pain and injury, find out the cause of the problem at hand. Talk with your doctor. Remember that Yoga and Pilates teachers are not certified doctors although they may be able to give you some handy tips and advices based on general knowledge and personal experiences.

Are all the classes performed in the hot room? If yes, then how hot does it get?

Well, almost all of our classes are taught in a medium to high heated humidified environment. Temperature ranges from 95 degrees Farenheit (35 degrees Celcius) to about 104 degrees Farenheit (40 degrees Celcius).

If you love and adore heat, great! The hottest class is Hot Yoga which has been a faithful practice that has been sworn by many to heal, energize, change and transform the body and mind. The heat will quickly warm your muscle up for all twist, stretch and compression that comes with this effective spine series.

Inferno Hot Pilates is also another very popular class performed in a medium heated room. Imagine working out your abs, core, legs and cardiovascular with fun, motivating music, energetic instructor and oh boy, you will definitely sweat by the end of this class! HIIT Yoga and Yoga Sculpt are also two other awesome heated classes that will spice up the routine of regular Yoga practitioners and all movement lovers out there.

Our Hot Vinyasa Flows are performed in a medium hot temperature room to allow muscles to warm up quickly so you will not need to go through a longer warm up sequence that is usually needed in a cold or non heated room. Practicing in a heated room is excellent as not only you will feel more relaxed, your muscles are ready, not tight and rigid.

How to prepare for a hot class

Most of our classes are heated, reducing the need for a long warm up, helping with the initial inflexibility, plus it gets the heart rate up quickly.

Hydrate your body, plan to be on time and choose to wear a proper attire. What you wear will affect your practice in the hot room. Invest in a few good sports bras and a couple pairs of yoga shorts or leggings. It’s best not to wear baggy or loose clothing which will hinder your practice.

Be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day prior to your practice. A well hydrated body is better able to sweat and dispel heat more efficiently. Bring a large bottle of water with you to class in order to hydrate moderately during the workout and right after class. Some may not even need to drink a drop of water while in class which is ultimately the ambition further down the journey of mindful practice.

Arrive early to get in the right head space so you can tune into a more relaxed mindset for class. Change into your yoga attire, head into the hot room and find a comfortable spot to set up your mat. Using a well-designed yoga mat that has a good grip is a great investment for a good workout. Be sure to put a yoga towel down on your mat because even a quality mat will get slippery due to all the sweating. Spend a few minutes on your back to relax, breathe, and acclimate yourself to the temperature of the room before class starts.

Why the heat is beneficial

Practicing in a heated room with adequate humidity gets your heart pumping and helps train for a healthier heart and lung. Together with proper breathing technique, the increased blood flow and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body helps nourish the deep tissues, muscles, glands and organs resulting in significant improvement of the entire cardiovascular, nervous and immune system.

Why breathing properly is important while practicing in the hot room

Re-discover slow, restorative breathing technique to alleviate stress and induce relaxation. Being calm helps you bring reason into your thought process, lowers your stress level and ultimately makes you happier. A calm mind cultivates inner strength, creativity and self confidence.

The pillar of your health lies in your breath. The energy, chi or prana in the body travels through the act of breathing. The capacity of the lung can be tremendously increased just by practicing diaphragmatic breathing. Warrior breath or Ujjayi breathing helps to increase vagal tone and stimulate the parasymphathetic nervous system, good for digestion and so much more. You will even learn to train the deepest layer of your abdominal muscles just by practicing breath alone! Don't worry if this sounds like unfamiliar territory, you will soon learn all these basic ancient secrets that have been around for thousands of years!

As a beginner practitioner, you must first learn to master your breathing and soon, you will see your daily workout and practice transform and benefit tremendously! If unsure where to start, perhaps begin with a simple inhale and exhale breath through your nose. To master movement, remember that you must first master your breath.

Why it's important to engage in a Yoga and fitness activity as we age

There is no magic pill to reverse the aging process. But if you want to counter the biological mechanisms that drive age-related conditions, like the accumulation of senescent cells, you will need to exercise.

At some point of our lives as we age past 30, we begin to loose our muscle mass and the effect will slowly impact the way we move and feel. It is important to include muscle-strengthening exercise, focus on things like hand-weights, resistance bands and bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, squats and lunges. Keep in mind that your weekly workouts should engage all of the major muscles in your body.

Showing up on your mat and training in a group setting is so much fun and classes can be done by men, women and virtually anyone who loves to sweat. You will burn calories, keep your heart and lungs healthy, increase your endurance, feel stronger and so much more. The benefits are fantastic and you will feel like a whole new person in no time!

After trying out the Intro-2-Weeks, what next?
